On horseback through the Canyon - 29.01.07
Deep down in the canyon in the morning, high above the gorge in the evening; along stony mountain trails at a walk today, cantering across vast plains tomorrow; barren desert a moment ago, lush green river banks just a little later... The manifold contrasts alone make ReitSafari Horse Trails' new horseback tour fascinating enough. The more than 300 km route takes participants from the upper Fish River Canyon to the Gariep/Orange River.

Setting out from the upper canyon area, about 40 km north of the main viewpoint, horses and riders negotiate stony trails and dry riverbeds on the first three days of the 9-day tour. The route takes them deep into the system of gorges, and then up again to the canyon's edge. It is an almost pristine area with not a living soul around. On the next three days the vast plains of Gondwana Cañon Park east of the canyon are crossed – partly at full canter. Game like springbok, gemsbok, Burchell's zebra or hartebeest may be spotted between quiver trees and euphorbia. On the last three days the riders continue across barren plains and down into the enormous valley eroded by the Gariep/Orange River. With a little luck wild horses, which were relocated from Garub in 1992, may be seen in Aussenkehr Nature Park. A narrow canyon marks the last stretch down to the banks of the Gariep/Orange River, lined by green vineyards...

Nights are spent in the open, in tents or in modest accommodations in the midst of nature. Camps are pitched by a supply team. This new tour combines the appeal of the well-established horseback safaris through Damaraland and the central Namib and tops long-distance horseback tours worldwide. Three departure dates have been set for this year.
Hiking the canyon with pack animals
Hiking enthusiasts can now enjoy the harsh beauty of the Fish River Canyon without lugging heavy backpacks along. On hiking tours arranged by Canyon Mule Trails all the luggage and equipment is carried by mules. These tours (4 to 5 days) are also conducted in the upper canyon area some 40 km north of the main lookout point. The guides explain the fauna and flora to their guests and provide insight into the everyday life of Namibia’s people. Canyon Mule Trails is a company run by formerly disadvantaged Namibians and supported by ReitSafari Horse Trails.
