From the Canyon to the Bavarian Forest - 12.03.07
Simon Angula has completed a five-week internship with the Miethaner Country Hotel in the Bavarian Forest in south-eastern Germany. On his return he said that what had impressed him most was the fact that all staffers jumped in wherever needed and without grumbling – e.g. cleaning the rooms is immediately followed by waiting on guests in the restaurant. He also said that he was amazed at everybody’s workload: the hotel with 64 beds and three restaurants is run by a family of only five plus four casuals.

Cheers! Simon Angula with his hosts, the Miethaner family.
Manageress Andrea Schwarzmüller (née Miethaner) put Angula to work in all the sections of the family business. Especially in the restaurant he was able to pull his weight immediately. There his knowledge of German, which he acquired in courses and through his work at the Cañon Lodge, proved particularly helpful.

Simon Angula even caused headlines in early March: A local newspaper featured him, his internship and his impressions of Germany under the headline 'From Namibia to the Bavarian Forest'. The opportunity to experience the world of the guests with whom he deals at the Cañon Lodge is no doubt an important part of the visit abroad. Some 60 percent of the lodge’s guests are from Germany.

Angula is not the first of Gondwana’s staffers who was invited to become an intern at the Miethaner Country Hotel; last June a staff member of Gondwana Kalahari Park was already there on a working stint. Contacts to the Miethaner Hotel were established four years ago at the canyon when Andrea Schwarzmüller worked at Cañon Roadhouse during one of her visits abroad.

Simon Angula enjoys a 'Fastnacht' parade (type of carnival) in Waiblingen on his weekend off.
